To continue our café hopping, my love and I headed to I Am Cafe last week for a dinner date. The place is along Haji Lane and is easy to find because it’s just by the roadside. They call this café as gateway to Europe though I can’t really tell from it’s overall ambiance that it’s European-inspired except for the huge Amsterdam wall painting. :)
Similar with Artistry Cafe, there are only limited tables available. The place is really small and most of the seats are lined outside the café or opposite the lane. It’s also an open air space / non-air-conditioned so depending on the time of day, it might be too humid to dine on mid day but could totally be romantic at night. We went there late in the afternoon or early dinner and the weather is just fine.
We ordered Fries Mayo, Battered Squid Rings, Hawaiian Five O Pizza, Iced Caramel Latte and house-brewed Iced Lemon Tea. We’re starving!
Fries & Mayo is their signature crispy thick-cut fries served with mayonnaise. It tastes like real potato and complements well with the mayo dip.
8 pcs of Battered Squid Rings, deep fried and served with mayonnaise too. I love calamari rings and it’s usually one of my orders when it’s in the menu. I Am’s version of calamari is so soft, the squid almost melts in my mouth.
Hawaiian Five O is made up of turkey ham, pineapple, mozzarella cheese and house-special pizza sauce. This may look like a normal pizza but both hubby and I agree that it’s highly recommended. The crust is gooey, biscuit-type and it’s really delicious.
And now for dessert… One of the selling points of this café is probably their Rainbow Cakes. I was sold too when I saw their appetizing multi-colored cake while looking out for reviews online.
The desserts are not listed on the menu so feel free to ask the servers or go to the counter to see them. Their layered cakes have different variations from Red Velvet to Chocolate to Rainbow to Rainbow Crepe. We chose the normal Rainbow Cake as the colors seem more happy and vibrant. The others we will have to try for another time. :)
Here’s a closer look of the cake, it’s so tall that it had to be served flat on the plate. It’s quite dense and heavy in the belly with rich cream cheese taste that is not too sweet. I love it but it’s not meant to be eaten alone. The portion is HUGE, the two of us could hardly finish it. :))
Though I Am’s ambiance is not so appealing and the place looks crowded, overall, their food is really good. No wonder it’s popular, attracting both tourists and local diners alike. We will definitely come back to try out their other main courses.
